There’s just something about film that asks me to slow me down. In a world where everything moves quickly and thousands of digital photos can be taken in a single day, film invites intention. It asks me to pause, to observe, and to truly see what’s unfolding in front of me. As an Ohio film wedding photographer, that rhythm feels deeply aligned with the way I believe weddings should be documented. Film isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.
When I shoot on film, every frame matters. There’s no rapid-fire clicking or endless reviewing of the back of a screen. Instead, I’m trusting my instincts and years of experience, watching light, waiting for emotion, and choosing the exact moment to press the shutter. That process naturally mirrors the documentary approach I bring to weddings. The laughter between friends, the quiet breath before walking down the aisle, the way someone’s hand reaches for another without thinking. Film holds those moments with a softness that feels honest and timeless.

Another reason I love shooting film is the way it renders color and light. Film has a depth that’s hard to replicate digitally. Skin tones feel natural, highlights glow instead of blowing out, and the grain adds texture that makes images feel almost tangible. When couples receive their photos, they often say the images feel like memories already. As an Ohio film wedding photographer, that’s exactly what I hope for. Photographs that feel less like perfect productions and more like pieces of a lived story.

Film also creates a different energy during the day. Because there are fewer frames, couples often relax into the moment instead of feeling like they’re constantly being photographed. The camera becomes less intrusive, and the experience becomes more about being present with the people they love. That quiet honesty is what draws me to film again and again.
Of course, shooting film requires trust, both from me and from the couples I work with. There’s no instant preview and no guarantee that every frame will be technically flawless. But that’s part of the beauty. Film embraces imperfection in a way that feels human. It reminds us that weddings aren’t staged productions. They’re emotional, messy, joyful gatherings of people who care deeply about one another.

Being an Ohio film wedding photographer means I get to preserve those moments in a way that feels timeless. Decades from now, when someone pulls out these photographs, I want them to feel the warmth of the day again, the sunlight, the movement, the quiet in-between moments that made the celebration what it was.
Film helps me hold onto that feeling. And that’s why I keep coming back to it.
