As a documentary-style photographer, I’ve completely ditched traditional posing instructions. It wasn’t an overnight decision, but rather a shift that came from truly listening to my clients and wanting to create images that feel authentic, not staged.
The wedding industry often emphasizes perfect poses and curated aesthetics. But for many couples, especially those who are introverted, neurodivergent, or simply uncomfortable in front of the camera, being told how to stand, smile, or move can feel unnatural and even anxiety-inducing.
I noticed that when I gave posing instructions, the moments I captured felt stiff and disconnected. My clients were more focused on doing things “right” than simply being present with each other. And honestly? That’s not what I’m here for.
I shifted my approach to be a fully documentary-style photographer which means I focus on observing and capturing moments as they naturally unfold. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
By stepping back and allowing couples to feel fully present, I’ve captured some of the most intimate, emotional, and genuine images of my career. My clients often tell me they felt comfortable and seen, and that their photos feel like them—not some Pinterest version of what a life should look like.
If the thought of stiff posing makes you cringe, I get it. That’s why I’m here to document your story exactly as it unfolds, in a way that feels natural and true to you. If you’re looking for a documentary-style photographer, let’s connect and get started on your dream photo gallery!
